WHAT: In a remote cottage just outside the exclusion zone, two retired physicists live quietly in the aftermath of a nuclear accident at the local power plant. But when a former colleague arrives unexpectedly, not only will they confront dark secrets from the past, but they will also have to confront the true cost of survival. Should they stay sheltered, or are they responsible for the young scientists who will otherwise die at the power plant? Should they enjoy their comfortable retirement, or risk everything to save the younger generation? Lucy Kirkwood’s thrilling play, The Children, explores the ethics of intergenerational accountability. Do we owe anything to future generations?
